Submit

Idle Ink is always open to submissions. We don’t believe in submission fees or literary snobbery; we are interested in stories in every genre from every type of writer. With that being said, we do have some preferences.

Easy sells

  • Science fiction
  • Contemporary fantasy
  • Slipstream
  • Horror
  • Stories which don’t easily fit into any genre

Hard sells

  • Tall tales with flawless protagonists
  • Fan fiction
  • Erotica
  • Shameless self-inserts
  • Pulp stories featuring damsels in distress
  • Stories which depend entirely on “shock value” and/or poor taste

Submission guidelines

Writers: What we need from you

  • All stories must be submitted in proper manuscript format (there’s a great template here).
  • Word limit: Up to 5,000 words (although we’re open to being convinced for the right story).
  • Should your work be accepted, all rights are retained by you.
  • Please only send one story at a time.
  • Stories which have been previously published are considered on a case-by-case basis. Please make us aware if your story has been published elsewhere.

Poets: What we need from you

  • Poems may be of any length and multiple poems can be sent at once.
  • Should your work be accepted, all rights are retained by you.
  • Please only send a maximum of three poems at a time.
  • Poems which have been previously published are considered on a case-by-case basis. Please make us aware if your poem has been published elsewhere.

What you’ll get from us

  • All submissions will be read and responded to within two weeks.
  • Simultaneous submissions are fine (but please do let us know if your work is accepted elsewhere).
  • At present, we can’t offer payment – sorry! This will hopefully change in the future.
  • We strive to create an open dialogue with writers and poets – if your work is rejected and you’d like some feedback, feel free to shoot us an email. Many great stories need a few tweaks before being published, and we will be happy to reconsider your story after it’s been reworked.

How to submit

  • Email your submission to idleink@outlook.com with the subject line “SUBMISSION: [Title]”
  • Cover letters can be brief, but must include the following information:
    • Your name (or pen name, if you use one)
    • The title of your work
    • Approximate word count
  • Accepted file formats: .doc, .docx, .rtf (please do not paste your work into the body of the email).

Good luck.
